Oliver the Watusi, the beloved mascot of Texas Motorplex, has passed away at the age of 22. His death marks the end of an unforgettable chapter for the Texas Motorplex family and the many drag racing fans who came to know him over the years. Texas Motorplex announced that Oliver passed peacefully, sharing the news with fans who had followed his story.

Oliver became much more than just a Watusi. With his enormous 119-inch horn span and calm personality, he quickly became one of the most recognizable faces connected to the Texas Motorplex. He appeared at major events, fan gatherings and photo opportunities, becoming a favorite with both longtime drag racing fans and families attending the track. NHRA coverage even highlighted Oliver welcoming drivers and fans during the Texas FallNationals.

Oliver was raised by his owner, Vincent Browning, and became famous outside of the racing world as well. His appearances at parades and community events made him a local celebrity, while a viral visit to a Petco helped introduce him to an even larger audience. In 2025, Oliver officially retired from his duties as the Texas Motorplex mascot and returned to Browning's farm in Raywood to enjoy his retirement.

For drag racing fans, Oliver will always be remembered as more than a mascot. He was part of the personality and tradition of the Texas Motorplex, especially during the Stampede of Speed and Texas FallNationals. Fans could take pictures with him, see him around the track and even take home an Oliver plush toy as a reminder of the gentle giant.

Oliver's passing leaves behind countless memories for his owners, the Texas Motorplex team and racing fans across Texas. His massive horns may have been what first caught people's attention, but his gentle nature and unique place in the drag racing community are what made him special. Oliver the Watusi will be missed, but his legacy at Texas Motorplex will continue to be remembered for years to come.
